The Detty December money plan: dates, tickets and the cost of showing up

₦396.54 billion. That is what the consultancy MO Africa Co. estimates people spent in Lagos during the 2025 festive season, according to Nairametrics. Detty December 2026 opens on 18 December, and the same report counts 3.6 million participants. Divide one figure by the other and you get about ₦110,150 each, by TIME AFRICA arithmetic. However, nobody spends an average. You spend a set amount on a specific bed and a specific ticket, so the useful job is to plan yours.

Detty December 2026: what is confirmed

Detty December Fest runs from 18 to 30 December in Lagos, across 13 festival days, according to the festival’s own site. The Grand Opening Concert with Wizkid is on Friday 18 December on the Detty Festival Stage. Organisers quoted by the News Agency of Nigeria say a second stage, Pulse, is new this year and meant for emerging artists. Africa.com reports that the 2025 debut drew more than 40,000 festivalgoers to Ilubirin.

The festival site lists two public passes. A Day Pass covers a single night, and a Weekend Pass covers three days. A VIP and VVIP tier with tables and hosted lounges is available by request. The site lists no prices. Africa.com says tickets are on sale through DOT Tix, the official ticketing partner. Yet when TIME AFRICA read the festival site on 19 October, it showed a “Passes open” label and a line saying sales open soon, with a notify list. Those accounts conflict, so check the live page before you plan around either.

The ₦396.54 billion, read carefully

Nairametrics reported the MO Africa study on 19 March 2026. It is titled The Economics of Euphoria: Lagos’ Detty December 2025. It counts 3.6 million participants across a 55-day window, from mid-November 2025 to 10 January 2026. Diaspora visitors account for 55 percent of the spending. Travellers starting in the United States made up 27 percent of international arrivals, the first time the US passed the UK as the top source market.

Two cautions apply. First, neither Nairametrics nor BusinessDay, which printed the same figure on 23 March at about $287.35 million, explains how MO Africa measured spending. Second, TIME AFRICA did not open the report itself. Treat the number as one consultancy’s estimate.

A second figure shows why. Agusto & Co., a Nigerian research house, put Lagos festive revenue in December 2024 at about ₦111.5 billion, or $71.6 million, from hospitality and entertainment within four weeks. The MO Africa estimate is about 3.6 times that, by TIME AFRICA arithmetic. However, the two cover different years, windows and scope. The gap does not show that spending tripled.

Where the Detty December 2026 money went

MO Africa’s split, as relayed by Nairametrics, puts hospitality and accommodation first at 44.23 percent, or ₦175.40 billion. Entertainment and nightlife took 32.67 percent, or ₦129.55 billion. Food and dining took 12.91 percent. The remaining 10.19 percent covers everything else, by TIME AFRICA arithmetic. The report also says Lagos ran at 238 percent of its designed human density capacity during the season.

What pushes your costs up

Agusto’s December 2025 note, written for last season, lists the pressures. It projected peak hotel occupancy of 85 percent in Victoria Island and Ikoyi. The note reported Yuletide airfares rising more than 150 percent, to ₦300,000 to ₦400,000 one way on some routes. Agusto said energy and security took 15 to 18 percent of overheads at premium venues in the first quarter of 2025, and that operators were passing the cost on. Short-lets made up about 20 percent of accommodation revenue in the 2024 season. Agusto also flagged pre-election uncertainty as a risk to premium occupancy.

Those are forecasts and 2024 data, so they are not 2026 prices. Still, they show where pressure has appeared before: beds and flights.

What it means for a globally minded professional

TIME AFRICA reads this through AfroNouveau, a global cultural identity bound by consciousness, not geography. Through that lens, December in Lagos is a season with a price list, and you can handle it like any other budget line. Our list of real events that define the movement shows how often a trip like this doubles as work.

Set a cap before you book. Then split it. As an illustration, apply MO Africa’s shares to a plan. For every ₦1,000 you expect to spend in Lagos, about ₦442 goes to where you sleep, ₦327 to entertainment and nightlife, ₦129 to food and ₦102 to everything else. That is TIME AFRICA arithmetic on aggregate shares, so your split will differ. The report’s category list does not say whether flights sit inside the total, so keep flights as a separate line.

Lock the bed first. That advice is a TIME AFRICA inference from Agusto’s occupancy forecast and the spending shares, and no 2026 source confirms it.

The season also works as a meeting place. A festival with two stages gives you a reason to meet peers in one city, a pattern the diaspora-led initiatives we have covered share. Decide which two nights are for work, and book those first.

Five questions to ask before you pay for Detty December 2026

  • Which pass covers the nights you want, and what does each night cost on its own?
  • What do the festival’s terms say about refunds and transfers? TIME AFRICA did not read the terms page, so read it yourself.
  • Is the price quoted in naira or dollars, and on what date?
  • What does the bed cost per night once cleaning and any deposit are in, and who gets paid?
  • How do you get from the bed to the venue, and home after the last act?

The missing number

The price of a pass is the number the public pages do not yet carry. When DOT Tix posts it, compare the Weekend Pass with three single Day Passes before you commit. If no figure appears before you must book your bed, hold your cap and walk away from any pass you cannot price.

Agusto describes an increasingly segmented market. The next set of prices will show who this season is priced for.
