Enters IWÀJÚ as its name translates in Yoruba language, “Forward/Future/Ahead”, Iwájú is an original animated series set in a futuristic Lagos, Nigeria. The Disney groundbreaking Nigeria series emerges, captivating hearts and minds with its visionary narrative and stunning visual storytelling. “Iwájú,” conceived by the ingenuous minds of Nigerian artists Roye Okupe and Ziki Nelson, the team had joked that they wanted to compete with Disney — then Disney called with an offer. Iwájú transports readers to a futuristic rendition of Lagos, Nigeria, where adventure and intrigue await at every turn.

Set against the backdrop of a technologically advanced Lagos, “Iwájú” follows the journey of two inseparable friends, Wale and Sola, as they navigate the complexities of a world transformed by innovation and upheaval.

In the inaugural issue, the duo finds themselves thrust into the year 2055, where the familiar streets of Lagos have undergone a remarkable metamorphosis into a high-tech utopia. Yet, beneath the veneer of progress lie the enduring challenges of poverty, crime, and corruption, serving as a stark reminder of the persistent struggles faced by the city’s inhabitants.

As Wale and Sola grapple with the realities of their new surroundings, they forge alliances with fellow young visionaries, united in their quest to effect meaningful change in Lagos. Together, they confront formidable obstacles, drawing strength from the bonds of friendship and the unwavering resolve to champion their beliefs.

“Iwájú” transcends the confines of traditional comic book storytelling, delving into themes of inequality and societal division with a deft touch. Director and Kugali co-founder Ziki Nelson aptly describes these themes as reflective of “the everyday reality of life in Nigeria and other parts of the world,” offering a poignant exploration of the human condition and the quest for a better tomorrow. Indeed, the series serves as a testament to the enduring power of aspiration and the indomitable spirit of resilience.

Originally slated for release in 2022 on Disney’s esteemed streaming platform, Disney+, “Iwájú” faced delays before finally making its highly anticipated debut on February 28, 2024. Despite the setbacks, the series has captured the imagination of audiences worldwide, offering a fresh perspective on the future of Africa and inspiring generations to come.

As readers immerse themselves in the captivating world of “Iwájú,” they are transported on an exhilarating journey filled with action, adventure, and humor. With its rich tapestry of storytelling and vibrant artwork, “Iwájú” promises to captivate audiences of all ages, inviting them to embark on an unforgettable odyssey through the boundless realms of imagination and possibility.
